Top 6 Skincare Essentials for Fall

From Finlay+Green Founder: Hollywood Makeup Artist Helen Marray-Finlay

With cooler weather on the way, it’s time to give your skincare routine a seasonal refresh. Helen Marray-Finlay, Finlay+Green’s founder and Hollywood makeup artist, shares her Top-6 Fall skincare essentials, plus simple tips to help your skin glow through fall.

Why Should I Change My Skincare Routine from Summer to Fall?

Due to the drop in temperature and lack of humidity at this time of year, skin can have difficulty retaining moisture. Fall and winter skincare should focus on hydration, restoration, and protection. By choosing products that soothe, calm, and protect your skin’s moisture barrier, you are locking in hydration for healthy, glowing, beautiful skin all season long.

Helen’s 6 Fall Skincare Favorites

1.   Ren’s Evercalm Gentle Cleansing Gel

Hydrating Cleanser

This has been one of my go-to cleansers for years. This gentle non-stripping gel cleanser supports the skin’s moisture barrier while effectively removing dirt, makeup, and impurities, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and, very importantly, comfortable. Because it’s formulated for sensitive skin and those who suffer from redness it’s the perfect cleanser for harsher winter weather and tight-feeling winter skin.

2.   Dermalogica’s Daily Milkoliant Exfoliator

Gentle Exfoliator

Having a gentle, yet effective, exfoliant as part of your winter skincare routine can work wonders to help brighten, polish, and smooth skin. It also helps facilitate the absorption of your other skincare products. However, exfoliation is not for everyone. It’s important to be gentle when applying so as not to damage the skin’s protective barrier. This is especially the case during perimenopause and menopause when the skin becomes thinner.

3.   Lancome’s Advanced Genifique Hydrogel Sheet Mask

Hydrating Face Sheet Mask

This sheet mask is not only the perfect fall treat, but it’s also a great quick skin-fix. This  “hydrogel matrix” infused face sheet helps to strengthen the skin’s moisture barrier to lock in hydration and enhance your glow! It can work in as little as 10 minutes to create a hydrated glowing base on which to apply makeup. It will beautifully enhance your Holiday makeup looks!

4.   Finlay+Green Skin Revitalizing Moisturizer

‘Buildable’ Moisturizer

‘Smart Skin Is In!’ For a healthy glow, this unique multi-tasker is the only face cream you will need for both day and night. Its buildable formula lets you adjust your hydration to match your skin’s needs no matter the season. A super-hydrator that locks in moisture, leaving your skin soothed, brighter, and refreshed for hours. It’s the perfect base and prep for any makeup.

5.   Quince Mulberry Silk Pillowcase

Silk Pillowcase

To maximize your nighttime skincare routine, investing in a silk pillowcase can be key. Since silk absorbs less moisture than cotton it’s less likely to absorb any of your nighttime creams and serums, allowing the skin to retain more moisture from this extra bit of overnight hydration. Even if you don’t use any skincare products at night, you will still benefit because silk will absorb less of your skin’s natural moisture.

6.   Kosas LipFuel Hyaluronic Lip Balm

‘Buildable’ Ultra-Hydrating Lip Balm

Comes in 4 shades, including clear, this is one of the better lip balms on the market.  Packed with Hyaluronic Acid it not only nourishes, smooths, and protects the lips, but it will also enhance your pout!

Helen’s Top-6 Tips to Achieve Glowing Skin During Fall and Winter

During fall and winter, skin can appear dull and lackluster as well as feeling tight and uncomfortable, with fine lines and wrinkles appearing more visible and accentuated. To help protect the skin and ease some of the discomfort, here are 6-top tips:

1.    Don’t forget to use SPF

Sun protection shouldn’t be reserved for summer. No matter the temperature the sun’s ultraviolet rays can still cause damage to the skin.

2.    Drink plenty of fluids

Staying properly hydrated is one of the most natural ways to get a healthier glow and more resilient skin.

3.    Moisturize your face and body while skin is still damp

Moisturizing while your skin is still damp helps to seal in additional moisture.

4.    Take warm showers instead of hot

Hot water will strip away your skin’s natural oils faster than lukewarm water and cause even more damage.

5.    Consider investing in a humidifier

A humidifier will add moisture back into the air which can help relieve parched and sensitive winter skin.

6.    Eat a nutritious well-balanced diet

Good nutrition can generate robust skin cells. Healthier, stronger skin cells retain more moisture and have a suppler form, so skin won’t crack with dryness.

TAKEAWAY

To keep your skin healthy throughout fall and winter it makes sense to make some skincare changes. Because the water content of the epidermis (outermost layer of skin) reflects the level of humidity around it, dry winter air can deplete your body’s moisture and hydration levels more quickly, and they will need to be replenished more often.
